TNS have stunned Welsh football by proposing a controversial ground-share with Blue Square Premier League side Chester City.

The Saints are reviewing all options, in the wake of their snubbing by the Welsh Ground Improvements board, including leaving Park Hall after just two seasons in Oswestry.

TNS had hoped to secure significant grant aid to ensure their ground meets domestic criteria, but were left furious when their bid was rejected.

General manager Ian Williams said: “In the wake of that decision the club is reviewing a number of options, which will include upgrading our current facilities.

“However the club is also investigating a possible ground-share option with Chester City of the Blue Square Premier League.

“Any such proposal is at an early stage, but with the clock ticking on meeting domestic licence criteria it was felt we should explore all possible options.
“We are still committed to playing in the Welsh football structure.”

Welsh Premier chairman Phil Woosnam confirmed The New Saints had informed the league of their intentions this week.

“I accept that the club moving to Chester City will not reflect well on the league, but there is very little that the league can do,” said Woosnam.

“If the Deva Stadium is in Wales and meets all relevant domestic criteria then the league could not prevent TNS going through with this proposal.

“We would also have to ensure TNS had primary use of the ground and all facilities at the ground.”

TNS must inform the league of their intentions by the end of the month.

However Welsh Premier spokesman John Deakin warned the proposal raises several political problems.

“Where two national associations are involved things become difficult with situations like this,” he said “There had been an understanding between the two associations that the English FA would not accept any more Welsh FA affiliated clubs and this remains the case as far as I am concerned.”

TNS only relocated to Park Hall in 2008 following a merger between Welsh Premier rivals Oswestry Town and Llansanffraid.
