Defeat is so hard to take for Jets' boss

JOHN LAVERY revealed that his team’s semi-final defeat against Newcastle Eagles had been a bitter pill to swallow.

The Cheshire Jets head coach reflected on the misery of his side’s 168-163 aggregate loss after a 79-64 second leg defeat at the Northgate Arena.

Lavery saw Adam Brown top-score for Jets with 19 points alongside Bill Cole on 18 points and Kai Williams on 11 points, but Eagles claimed a 15 point victory on the night.

Lavery said: “Losing the second leg at the Northgate was a bitter pill to swallow because we played really well in the first half against a very good Newcastle side.

“I was very disheartened after the game because the team has played so well during the last few months of the season.

“We had a lot of open looks during Sunday’s game but we couldn’t take them and a lot of our shots were short.

“The players have done such a great job this year considering all the injury problems we have suffered, but we have stuck together and given it everything.

“It’s chalk and cheese when you look at where we were at the start of the season and where we have finished up.

“We have proved a lot of people wrong by making the play-offs and finishing the regular season in sixth spot was a great achievement as well as finishing in the final four in the play offs.”

Lavery revealed he was hoping to see his club build on what had been achieved.
He added: “I am going to talk to all the players before they fly home later this week to see if I can keep them.

“They have all put themselves in the shop window after producing a number of impressive performances, but I will sit down with them all and talk to them about next season before they fly home.

“It has been my first year as the coach at the club and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I have made mistakes, but I have learned from them and we have stayed focused.

“It is very early days as far as next season is concerned, but I would love to see the club build on what has been achieved.”
