CRIME novelist Ruth Rendell has chosen the name for Chester Zoo’s new arrival.
The elephant-loving author, who has long supported the zoo, called the baby elephant Jamilah.
The name, pronounced jah-mee-lah, is a word meaning ‘beautiful’.
Baroness Rendell, responsible for the popular novels featuring Det Chief Insp Wexford, said: “I am honoured and proud to be involved with the naming of the zoo’s new baby elephant.
“You only have to take one look at her to see the name fits perfectly.”
Jamilah is daughter to proud mother Thi and father Upali.
Thi, 28, who has been a mother on six other occasions, also has a grandaughter, Nayan.
Nayan was born in July last year, to Thi’s daughter Sithami, 13.
Jamilah, the new calf, has put on an average of 15kg a week since her birth, when she weighed around 140kg.
She has since been exploring her new home to the delight of visitors.
