EVERY dish that comes from the kitchen at The Rainbow is prepared from scratch in the kitchen at The Rainbow. There are no frozen imports posing as homemade.
What arrives on your plate is the real McCoy.
The promise of good honest food comes from Peter Wright, new owner, who is also the chef, so it’s a pledge he knows he can keep.
On the day I booked in for lunch The Rainbow specials board offered a range of tasty options including Barbary duck, sea bass and supreme of chicken. All of the above were tempting, but my companion and I sidestepped them in favour of the lunch time menu.
He ordered ham hock and parsley terrine with chutney as a starter, followed by homemade Welsh black beef and ale pie with mash and greens, and I, being partial to puds, went straight to a main course of rump steak. mushrooms, tomato and chips leaving time and space to decide on dessert later.
Everything, as promised, was homemade and delicious, particularly the most
stately of pies, which was packed with prime beef laced with ale. The rump steak was pink but not bloody, just the way I like it, and the chips were magnificent, all rough-cut and chunky.
It was a chilly January Saturday. Outside the wind was blustery and the sleet ridden rain soaked in a second, so of course that was my excuse for going for the warming, sweet comfort of sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce.
Served hot with the contrast of ice cream it was an absolute delight evoking a ‘Nigella’ response of swooning over each moist mouthful. The richest of cake, the smoothest of caramel – what more could a girl wish for?
We relaxed in front of a crackling wood fire, before saying goodbye to our charming waitress.
“Bye darling, come again,” she said as we opened the door to brave the weather.
It certainly will be worth a return visit to The Rainbow. See if the chef has the Wright touch for you too.
