YOUNG footballers from a Chester school are celebrating after they managed to win a key match.
Scores of fans turned out to support the King’s School Under 13s football team who went head-to-head with St Bede’s in the quarter final of the Independent Schools Football Association Cup.
The King’s turned out victorious 4-2, and they are preparing now to take part in the competition’s semi-finals next week when they play Hampton School.
School spokesman Daniel Bourhill said: “It was a great result for King’s that could have swung either way in extra-time. King’s had the better chances of the first half, as George Back got in behind the defence time after time. Shun Sato provided the counter-attacking pass that set Back free down the left wing, where he weaved his way into the box past a couple of defenders and smashed the ball in at the near post.
“After a scrappy game of few goals, extra-time was a revelation. Four goals were scored over the short period of fourteen minutes. The opening two goals came from set pieces in quick succession; Will Smith delivered a great free kick that was met with a powerful header by Sam Pode, followed by a corner that was nodded into the roof of the net by Tommy Speed. St Bede’s were able to pull a goal back with a great strike into the top corner, but King’s were then able to put the game to bed when Pode closed the keeper down and the ball was tucked home by Stephen Wynne.
“Good determination and work rate was again the key to their victory.”
