PROUD members of an Ellesmere Port tennis club are celebrating after scooping two awards at the annual Cheshire County Awards evening.

Ellesmere Port City Tennis Club scored the double success after collecting both the Cheshire tennis club of the year award and the lifetime achievement award, which was received by the club’s coach, Monica Robinson.

Monica said: “I am honoured to have won an award and even more delighted that we have won club of the year. It couldn’t have been achieved without the help of the children, parents, coaches and committee who all work together as a team in serving the whole community.”

The evening, which was held at the Park Royal Hotel in Warrington, was attended by more than 200 people, including chief executive of the LTA, Roger Draper, Cheshire Lawn Tennis Association president, Barbara Bloor, and various clubs, coaches, players and volunteers.

The club, now operating independently, was praised for the quality of its tennis programme, which provides competition for all ages and abilities.

Chairperson of the club, Alison Fletcher, said: “The club has had a great year in both team and individual competitions.

“We want to ensure the club remains accessible to all and winning this award has highlighted the fact that we are hitting our targets in all areas of the game.”

She added: “We are extremely proud of our coach, Monica, who over many years has proved her life-long commitment to promoting the sport and developing any talent that comes her way.”

The Ellesmere Port City Tennis Club will begin a new programme of junior coaching at the start of November.
