A YOUNG football fan had her dreams fulfilled after being picked as a mascot for an England friendly at Wembley.

Proud parents Gillian and Gwynne Matthews said they were “bursting with pride” as they watched their nine-year-old Alice walk out of the famous tunnel holding a flag at England’s friendly game with Hungary on Wednesday, August 11.

Alice, who attends Oldfield Primary School, was picked to be a mascot after being entered into a BT prize draw by her dad, who is a broadband engineer for the company.

Mum Gillian, of Rosslyn Road, Vicars Cross, said that the news didn’t sink in for Alice until the night before the big match.

She said: “She was very excited on the day and nervous too I think. But she took it all in her stride and they did a rehearsal about 5.30pm before going on for the real thing just before 8pm.”

Alice, who is a member of the Girlguiding Association, had her first brush with fame when she met controversial England manager Fabio Capello.

Mum Gillian said: “She was back stage and when she turned around he [Fabio Capello] asked how all the mascots were doing and if Alice was okay. She didn’t know what to say - I think she was quite awestruck by the whole thing.”

Alice was welcomed on to the legendary Wembley Stadium pitch by a deafening applause from more than 72,000 people.

Gillian added: “When she finally walked out I was nearly in tears – I was bursting with pride – it was a really emotional night to be honest.  I never got the chance to do anything like that when I was young - it was a great opportunity for her.”

Avid Liverpool supporter Alice was also watched by dad Gwynne and brother Andrew, 12, who are die-hard Manchester United fans.

Despite the family being divided in their support for premiership teams, they joined together to support Alice and enjoyed two spectacular goals by skipper Steven Gerrard.

England went on to win the match 2-1,
Alice was rewarded by the FA for her efforts with a brand new England sweatshirt and goodie bag.
