Road safety clampdown in Wrexham centre

POLICE in Wrexham are warning motorists driving through the town centre to follow the road regulations or expect to be pulled up by the long arm of the law.

Community Beat Manager John Clarke said complaints had been made by businesses in the Charles Street and Yorke Street area of the town that motorists were flouting access restrictions on a regular basis.

He said: “We are going to be taking action on this issue with fixed penalty notices for people who break the regulations.”

PC Clarke said the move was being supported by Wrexham Council.

Last month the Leader reported that drivers were causing concerns for people around Charles Street and Yorke Street. Among them was Stephanie Booth, owner of the Wynnstay Arms.

Mrs Booth said she had nearly been run over by a quad bike riding around the streets. She said traffic regulations were being ignored by a large number of road
users.

In November last year police officers in Wrexham carried out an operation to enforce road restrictions along Duke Street near the bus station.

The road, between Regent Street and Lord Street, was being used as a shortcut by drivers, despite signs clearly stating it could only be used by taxis, buses and for loading purposes.

Can we do something about all te tables and people sprawling across outside the Wynstay? On weekends, you have to walk in the road and nearly get knocked down by legitimate users of the road. Is there no law against putting tables this far out,or does Ms Booth dictate in Wrexham as she tried to in Llangollen?

WAFC - I couldn't agree more! Those tables are a right hazzrd I find it difficult pushing a pram past there, so god knows what it's like trying to get through in a wheelchair. The Wynnstay seems to have become the new Wetherspoons of the town!

Nice to see the Police pandering to Dame Stephanie as well as the council! Agree with everything said about the sprawl of cheap garden furniture outside Wynnstay. Pc John Clarke does not seem to bother about intimidating begging in town centre but perhaps if the Boothmeister mentions it he will. Also does this mean we wont have fire engines doing regular circuits of towncentre on fri/sat nights?

Mark Polin please take note of the foregoing comments.... in your desire to improve the public perception of the police.... its a common belief that the police force are there primarily to serve the business and institutions of Wrexham rather than serve the wider community... at which they have been a total failure

So Duke Street is restricted for use by taxis, buses and loading/unloading, what about Disabled Parking along the Bright House side? Disabled Parking is already at a premium at the top of the town! Where are the required notices regarding the Disabled Parking?

We must live in a very safe Wrexham now, if this is the most pressing issue for the dibble!
