ELEPHANTS at Chester Zoo had plenty to shout about as they took their first steps out onto their new paddock.

The herd of Asian elephants trumpeted their approval as they explored their newly made-over outdoor enclosure. More than 2,000 tonnes of sand has been added to the paddock, which has also had something of a makeover with rocks and logs used to create terraces.

Upright logs for scratching and pushing have also been added and the sand will give the elephants a perfect chance to dust themselves down and take an afternoon nap.

Eveline De Wolf, Elephants team leader, said: “Our herd of elephants have been very patient whilst this work was carried out but they have finally had their chance to explore. Seeing them walk around excitedly and make use of the whole paddock is confirmation of their approval.”
