BUDDING rafters are being encouraged to sign up for a massive charity race taking place this summer.
The Chester Rotary Club raft race will take place on the River Dee near the Suspension Bridge on the morning of Sunday, July 4, in support of charity Help for Heroes.
Organisers expect the event this year to be even bigger than last year, when 45 rafters battled it out over the course from the Boat House Inn, downriver over the weir to the finishing line.
Spokesman Brendan Witter said: “The theme will be great historical events through the ages which can have a liberal interpretation and the main beneficiary charity on this occasion will be Help for Heroes which supports British soldiers injured in conflict together with other local charities.
“This summer fun event on the Dee has been taking place annually over the last 35 years with many hundreds of thousand pounds raised for a variety of needy causes and this year is planned to be no exception.
“A variety of sponsorship opportunities are still available and companies or organisations looking to increase their profile in the local community are urged to support the event.
“It promises to be a fun day and there are prizes not just for the first crew over the line but also for fastest men’s, ladies and pub rafts as well as a prize for the best representation of the historical theme.”
