US President Barack Obama monitoring GM Europe situation closely

US President Barack Obama is believed to have agreed to keep in close touch with German chancellor Angela Merkel ove the future of General Motors' European arm.

Earlier this week GM announced that it was no longer going ahead with the sale of its European operation, which includes Vauxhall in the UK and Opel and Germany, to Canadian parts manufacturer, Magna International.

This brought some relief to hundreds of workers from Wrexham, Flintshire and Chester, who faced an uncertain future under a new owner.

President Obama is believed to have secured an agreement with Ms Merkel that she should “co-ordinate” with him on the future of GM Europe during a phone call.

The American government is the majority shareholder in GM but a spokesman for Ms Merkel said President Obama told her that he had not been involved in the car maker’s decision to scrap the sale of Vauxhall and Opel.
