A PAIR of MPs have welcomed a deal that will safeguard jobs at the Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port after months of uncertainty.

Delyn MP David Hanson and Mark Tami, who represents Alyn and Deeside, were speaking after a deal was reached between unions and Canadian firm Magna International ahead of the latter's long-awaited takeover of the plant.

And they underlined the importance of the deal, which is set to provide job security to hundreds of people living in the region.

Mr Hanson said: "No forced redundancies will take place and it is estimated that 600 jobs have been saved at Ellesmere Port and Luton as a result of Unite's deal with Magna.

"This agreement offers job security to Vauxhall employees through to 2013 and boosts the plant's prospects for future car production."

Mr Tami added: "This is a massive relief for the workers and production at Ellesmere Port will grow to nearly 148,000 units."
