OWNERS say it is not yet clear what caused a fire to break out at an Oswestry pub on Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services took over an hour to tackle the blaze which started in the external ‘cellar’ at the Three Pigeons on Albert Road, Oswestry, and spread into the roof space.
The alert was put out at around 5.30pm on Sunday, and two fire crews were dispatched from Oswestry - followed by an Incident Commander, a crew from Chirk and an aerial ladder platform from Shrewsbury.
The pub was recently taken over by The New Saints football club and underwent a complete refurbishment earlier in the year.
Concern
On Monday morning, Mike Harris, owner of the Three Pigeons and The New Saints Football Club said: “We don’t know too much about it yet, I’ve had a quick look and we’re just now waiting for information.
“Obviously we’re a bit concerned about how it started. Fires like this don’t start by accident.
“It must have caught light and gone into the roof, you can see some of the damage was done when they were putting the fire out.
“I don’t think it’s done any damage to the main part of the pub itself, just the cellar, the kitchen and the toilets.
“When we know more we can assess the damage and see how soon we can reopen,” he added.
A resident at nearby Castlefields said: “I heard the fire engines arrive but I don’t know what happened. There was a fair bit of smoke though.”
