CHESTER has been named the UK's eighth favourite city in a poll by a leading UK travel magazine, beating both Liverpool and Manchester.

London took the top spot at the Condé Nast Traveller 17th Annual Readers’ Travel Awards, announced at the Ham Yard Hotel in London this week.

Peter Lewis, city centre manager working with the business improvement district (BID), said the result was a sign of Chester's ongoing economic revival.

“We're really happy at the Ch1chesterbid to hear of this news,” he said. “Having read the results and realised that all the other cities voted in the top ten on the list are much bigger than we are, we're very pleased in gaining eighth position.

“The list is an impressive one and shows that Chester is beginning to recover from a very difficult position in recent years and can look forward to greater improvement and moving higher up this table.

“The future is looking bright and our business's will be encouraged by such good news. Maybe the new saying to potential investors is 'keep your eye on Chester, it just gets better'.”

In November last year Chester beaten Venice, Prague and Santorini on a list of the most beautiful cities in Europe favoured by Americans.

The city was the fifth choice city behind Riga, Bergen, Innsbruck and Dubrovnik in a poll by USA Today.

The newspaper attributed the Roman walls and ‘charming collection of Tudor and Victorian buildings and a delightful shopping district filled with half-timbered shops reminiscent of a Grimm tale,’ to Chester’s high ranking.

The Condé Nast Traveller top 15 list of UK cities, with last year's position in brackets, is:

1. London (1)
2. Edinburgh (2)
3. Bath (3)
4. York (4)
5. Brighton (12)
6. Cambridge (7)
7. Oxford (8)
8. Chester (new entry)
9. Glasgow (5)
10. Manchester (6)
11. Bristol (10)
12. Liverpool (9)
13. Salisbury (new entry)
14. Newcastle (14)
15. Norwich (new entry)
