BUSINESS owners across Chester are being invited to find out more about the city’s planned Christmas celebration.

A drop-in day will be held at the Town Hall on Tuesday, September 9.

The event is being staged by Marketing Cheshire, who run the Chester Christmas Market and are managing the Chester Christmas Campaign in partnership with key players from across the city.

Organisations supporting the scheme and taking part in the drop-in session include CH1 Chester BID, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Chester Cathedral, Chester Race Company, Chester Zoo, Grosvenor Shopping Centre, The Forum Studio Theatre, and Theatre in the Quarter.

Their representatives will be present to answer questions about the campaign and events from local business people between 12 noon and 7pm.

The Chester Christmas entertainment programme gets fully underway with the annual Chester Christmas Light Parade though the city-centre and the start of the Chester Christmas Market on November 20.

The Christmas Market is set to be bigger and better than last year with more stalls and a greater variety of festive treats and will extend beyond its traditional venue in the Town Hall Square. It will run until December 14.

Also making a return is Winter Wonderland at Chester Racecourse, which takes place from 13th November until 24th December and will once again create a magical festive fantasyland filled with fun and excitement for all the family.

Visitors and residents will also be able to enjoy a host of spectacular parades filling the streets with lights, colour and noise.

The lantern parade presented by local school children takes place on November 27, while the traditional Winter Watch Parades with their cast of Christmas characters make two appearances in Chester on December 4 and December 11, followed by the annual Saturnalia Parade on December 18 when Roman soldiers in full armour carry flaming torches and celebrate the festive season.

New for 2014 is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe exhibition at Chester Cathedral that is set to bring C S Lewis’ classic children’s tale to life.

The exhibition will run from November 29 until January 6 and is free to enter.

Visitors to the cathedral can also enjoy the Christmas Tree Festival in the cloisters during the same period; a special screening of ‘The Snowman’ film, accompanied by a live 25-piece professional orchestra and a host of concerts, seasonal readings, carols and services during the Advent and Christmas period.

Traditional pantomime tops the bill at The Forum Studio Theatre 6th December-4th January, when the Aladdin takes to the stage to defeat the wicked Abanazar and claim the magic lamp, while Theatre in the Quarter returns to St Mary’s Centre, where they will present a new version of Alice in Wonderland.

Lantern Magic will be held at Chester Zoo, where visitors will be able to journey through the gardens, visit the elephant house and fruit bat forest, make a lantern, meet friendly festive characters and sample deliciously tasty treats. The event will be held from December 4-23.

There are also a host of concerts and events happening in Chester over the Christmas period including a Santa Dash through the city-centre on 7th December in aid of the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Nicola Said, Marketing Cheshire head of Marketing, said: ‘We are really excited about sharing details of the Christmas in Chester campaign with businesses in the city and look forward to welcoming as many as possible to the drop in session to meet our key partners who are supporting the initiative’.

Simon Warburton, director of operations at Chester Cathedral, said: “We are delighted to be presenting The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe exhibition as part of this year’s Christmas in Chester experience and look forward to welcoming everyone to the Cathedral during the festive season.”

Businesses will be able to attend the drop in session any time between 12-7pm on Tuesday 9th September to find out more about all of these Christmas events and talk to the various partners about the Marketing Campaign.
