FAMILIES revelled in carnival fever during Chester’s largest community festival.

Thousands flocked to the 21st Blacon Community Festival which this year marked 100 years since the start of the First World War.

The occasion featured a variety of themed celebrations, a military museum, weapon displays, Brazilian dance, fairground attractions, dog shows and baking competitions.

Children from the five Blacon Primary Schools opened the event with a colourful musical procession through the streets of Blacon, led by Cheshire Dance, whose members demonstrated popular dances from 100 years ago such as the turkey trot, grizzly bear and the camel walk.

Organised by Avenue Services in Blacon, the festival took place at Blacon High School, Melbourne Road, on Saturday.

Other fun activities included dance workshops for children, pony rides, a bouncy castle and slide and a show from the Whitchurch Dog Display Team, which performed a show involving 20 different breeds of dog.

There was a prize also for the best dressed First World War style stall, and baking competitions, raffles, book and cake stalls and fundraising stands.

Organisers said the event is one of which families look forward to most of the year, and gets bigger and better each year with new attractions for families to enjoy.
