VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help support a Summer Reading Challenge in libraries in the area.

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) is looking for people aged between 13 and 24 to work as ‘reading activists’ over the summer holidays.

Once recruited, they will be given training and help library staff encourage children to complete the challenge, which this year is called Mythical Maze. They will also be called on to help with displays, events and craft activities funded by councillors.

The Summer Reading Challenge is produced annually by the Reading Agency to encourage children to maintain their reading skills and confidence during the holidays.

Clare Ashbee, specialist librarian for Cheshire West and Chester libraries, said: “In 2013 more than 4,700 children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge across Cheshire West. Volunteers will enable us to ensure all children have the opportunity to participate again this year while gaining many benefits themselves.

“Not only is encouraging children to get reading and enjoy books extremely rewarding, but volunteering is a great way to gain experience and is sure to impress any future employer, college or university.”
