TWO people were taken to hospital with heat exhaustion during Sunday’s sweltering Chester Half Marathon.

A total of 100 people pulled out of the race as temperatures soared to about 23C, although organisers said nobody suffered any serious health issues.

A spokesman said: “A couple of people were taken to hospital for precautionary reasons, but nothing came of this.

“Everyone that ran is fine and we had plenty of water left at the end of the race.”

The race started at 9am, which meant many of the front-runners – including Kenyan-born winner Mohammed Abu-Rezeq – had crossed the finish line before temperatures peaked.

“We had water and Lucozade every mile or so around the course and made sure everyone was hydrated,” the spokesman said. “We gave out plenty of pre-race advice too.”

The Countess of Chester Hospital said it could not comment on any treatment given to runners brought in.

The event saw a record number of entrants, with 7,000 competing in the main race and 500 in the family fun run.

Winner Abu-Rezeq said he had noticed the heat but had been helped in the early part of the morning by the wind.

He said: “The weather was really warm, but the wind helped me get round in good time.

“This was the best time I’ve ever done in a UK race and I’ll be back again next year to try to beat it again.”

His winning time was 1hr, 5mins 48 secs, more than two minutes faster than his winning time in 2013.
