MYSTERY still surrounds the identity of a body discovered in Chester 30 years ago.

The man was found in the River Dee on the evening of August 24, 1984, and was dressed in a two piece suit with a white shirt and tie.

Believed to be aged 65-75, he was carrying £9.46 in cash and a packet of cigarettes.

Details were made available by the UK Missing Persons Bureau, which holds information on unidentified bodies or body parts across the country.

The case file states: “[The man] was seen at 1845 putting his head in the River Dee, Chester.”

The bureau also holds files on three other cases relating to Cheshire – in Frodsham, Widnes and Crewe.

Cheshire Police have been unavailable for comment, although forces in other areas have said that identities can remain unknown if the people were from outside the force area or from foreign countries.

One stated: “Once all enquiries to identify a person have been exhausted their details will remain on the national missing persons bureau website and any new information will be investigated.”

The file on the Chester body also reveals the man was “thin, white European, was lacking lower teeth” and had an “unspecified peculiarity” with his ears.

In Frodsham, the body of a “stocky” man aged between 40 and 60 was discovered on banks of the River Mersey close to the port where it joins the Manchester Ship Canal.

It was estimated he had been in the water for 12 days before he was found, on September 11, 1983.

In Widnes, a decomposed body was washed up by the River Mersey on July 29, 1980, and in Crewe an unidentified tattooed man was found dead in a field on June 6, 2005.
