FASHIONS brightened up a rainy afternoon at the races yesterday.

Heavy showers couldn’t dampen spirits as women from across Wales and the North West added a splash of colour to the proceedings at the Chester Races.

For the first day of the three-day event, pearls and tattoos jockeyed for position with bright shades, pretty pastels and bold separates.

Debra Mahon, from Chester, was treated to a day at the races for her 60th birthday by daughter Stacey Darby and friends Michelle Leedham, Nikita Encarnacao, Amy Ward, Jessica Keogh and Kim Hollows.

“They’re treating me,” said Debra. “Yesterday it was a surprise party and today this. I’ve been to the races before and I love it. We’re having a lovely time.”

Nikita was wearing a Top Shop dress, Amy and Jessica found their outfits at online store Celeb Boutique and Kim bought hers at Flannels of Liverpool.

Nikita’s full arm fantasy tattoo, created by Golden Dragon in Chester, was one of several impressive examples of body art on show.

Friends Amy Smith and sisters Jodie and Chloe Ross-Jones travelled from Sandbach for the afternoon.

Amy was wearing a dress from high street store Zara while Jodie sported a dress from online retailer Asos and Chloe wore a trouser suit by designer Ted Baker.

Classy pants were also the look of choice for Nikki Wright.

Celebrating her 20th birthday was Nikki, from Carlisle, who travelled down by train with her parents for the day.

Kayleigh Bonar, 22, from Hawarden made the trip to Chester with friends. Her white dress featured a pearl-covered bodice and was from Quiz Clothing at Debenhams of Chester.

Another Debenhams buy was the dress worn by Alexandra Edwards from Chester who was joined by her mother Daphne and friends Victoria Parry and Lheanna Collins, from Bristol, who wore Boden.

“The rain can’t spoil it at all,” said Alexandra. “It’s always a great day at the races.”
