THE Chester Cathedral gardeners are looking for more volunteers to help maintain the only green space within the city walls.

The gardens of the cathedral are maintained throughout the year by a dedicated team of garden volunteers.

They operate under the direction of the cathedral’s Custos Hortorum.

This valuable asset for the pleasure of citizens and visitors is funded entirely by the Friends of Chester Cathedral.

The Cloister Garth was awarded the honour of Cheshire Garden of Distinction following its construction in 2008.

Following the establishment of the Jubilee Garden on St Werburgh Street in 2012, it is the cathedral’s intention to bring the entire estate up to this standard of excellence as a tourist attraction in its own right.

Throughout the year the gardens are open to the public through the National Gardens Scheme.

The next time they will be open is June 14 under the National Open Garden Scheme and is one of only two cathedrals to open.

Anyone wishing to volunteer is invited to call the Custos Hortorum on 01352 840758 or email
