WAITING times at the Countess of Chester Hospital have fallen and more targets are being met, the Department of Health has said.

New figures show there has been a dramatic fall in waiting times at the hospital in the last three years.

They show that in 2010, 44 people in Chester were waiting more than a year for treatment and 212 people were waiting more than 26 weeks.

Last year, no patients had to wait more than a year for treatment and just 116 people waited more than 26 weeks – a 45 per cent reduction in waiting times.

Mark Brandreth, director of operations and planning at the hospital, said: “We have made real improvements in the last few years.

“Our clinicians work hard to try to ensure patients are seen as soon as possible.

“We would also encourage our patients to let us know if they can’t make an appointment so we can give the slot to someone else.”

There is more good news in the A&E department as all of its targets were met and average waiting times fell from about 70 minutes to 30 minutes.

Chester MP Stephen Mosley said: “We have had some great NHS news stories here in Chester recently.

“Hospital infections rates have been slashed to their lowest level for 15 years; waiting times have fallen dramatically and nobody is now waiting over a year for surgery and we are investing in the future of our city’s healthcare with a brand new state of the art Intensive Care Unit built on time and on budget.

“These new figures confirm what NHS users already know: we have hard working doctors and nurses in Chester who are delivering superb quality healthcare. The Government is backing them to keep us fit, healthy and living longer.

“I’m proud of the NHS here in Chester, particularly our Countess of Chester hospital.”
