TWO men who were arrested on the outskirts of Chester after carrying out a night-time raid at a pub have been jailed.

Karl Steinman, 31, of Cunningham Drive, Runcorn, received five years in prison, and Mark Roscaleer, 25, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to four years in prison at Chester Crown Court for the aggrevated burglary of The Gunners Pub, Thornton Road, Ellesmere Port, on May 8, 2012.

The pair, disguised and armed with screwdrivers and a claw hammer, broke into the pub in the early hours and woke up the two occupants, Sylvia Gladman and Steven Hill, who were asleep in separate rooms above the pub, and threatened them if they did not open the safe.

They took £6,321.68 from the safe but were arrested the next day in Tarvin, near Chester, and were found to have about £4,000 in cash on them.

A property on Dudley Road, Ellesmere Port, was also searched and police found clothing contaminated with anti-vandal paint, a motorbike, two helmets bearing Steinman and Roscaleer’s DNA, a JD Sports bag containing a balaclava and scarf, a claw hammer bearing Roscaleer’s DNA and a letter from Roscaleer to Steinman dated March 8, 2012, which revealed intent to rob a safe.

Speaking after the case, DC Oliver Carruthers of Chester CID, said the victims were made to go through a “terrifying” ordeal.

He said: “This was a long and complex investigation which involved a number of forensic enquiries.

“The victims were subjected to a terrifying ordeal as they were threatened in their own home by two masked men who were in possession of weapons.

“Clearly, these are dangerous individuals and it is a positive result that they are now in prison.”

During setencing Judge Elgan Edwards, the Recorder of Chester, said the incident was “a very serious matter” that was “targeted and premeditated”.

He said the ordeal must have been “a terrifying experience” for the occupants.
