THE new sixth form centre named in honour of a teenager who died at Hillsborough has been opened by his parents.

The Henry Rodgers Sixth Form Centre at Queen’s Park High School in Handbridge, Chester, was opened by Ronnie and Steve Rodgers in a ceremony last week.

Henry was a sixth former at Queen’s Park when he tragically lost his life in the Hillsborough Disaster almost 25 years ago.

Shortly afterwards, the family set up the Henry Rogers Memorial Fund to support students at the school in memory of their son. The latest project to benefit is the sixth form centre’s refurbishment.

The project was managed by sixth form students, led by sixth form leaders Jack Salmon and Daniela Hyatt, who gave up their February half-term to paint the centre.

After enjoying afternoon tea to mark the opening, the assembled staff, students and governors listened to speeches from deputy head Karen Logan and chair of governors Patrick Hill, who thanked the students and staff who had worked so hard to make the new centre such a success and the Rogers family for their continued support of students over the past 25 years.

Mr Rogers said: “The centre has captured a truly comfortable and yet purposeful atmosphere.

“We feel very proud on behalf of Henry that you and the students were so enthusiastic about the whole project.

“With the plaque of Henry so prominent on the wall, he still very much remains part of Queen’s Park High School.

“We’re delighted this is a lasting legacy and will benefit the students in a positive way for many years to come.”

Mr and Mrs Rogers presented the school with an extra £500 contribution to the fund.
