STARS from the Cheshire Phoenix basketball team have been visiting schools to encourage pupils to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Since the beginning of December, the Phoenix have won 14 out of their last 17 matches and have reached the semi-final stage of the British Basketball League’s prestigious Trophy competition, and virtually ensured a place in the play-off competition for the Championship.

The players, along with head coach John Lavery, have also been busy delivering their ‘Hoops for Health Basketball Roadshow’ in primary schools.

The scheme, funded in partnership with Your Housing Group, Sport Cheshire and Cheshire West and Chester Council, is introducing healthy lifestyle and eating choices to pupils in years 5 and 6 along with a passing on a few on-court hoops skills.

After the roadshow, pupils receive further basketball coaching from the club’s community coaches and are given free tickets to a Phoenix home game at the Northgate Arena in Chester.

The Phoenix is unique among the professional basket clubs in the UK as it is a community interest company, run on a not-for-profit basis and owned and run by volunteer supporters.

Andrew Donaldson, chairman of the club, said: “It’s a win-win situation. The pupils of our local schools get to meet some sporting role models, receive some great lifestyle messages in an exciting and fun situation, and are introduced to family-friendly and exciting sport.

“The club taps into a new generation of supporters and the players get to feel they are part of the community in which they ply their trade.”
