FIRMS near Chester could be set for an economic boost if a company wins a large MoD contract.

Capenhurst Nuclear Services is one of five sites shortlisted as part of the MoD’s Submarine Dismantling Project which would see a total of 27 decommissioned and defuelled nuclear submarines dismantled at the site.

If the company is successful there will be a large boost to the local construction industry as the management facility is built and some management jobs at the site created.

CNS is up against four other sites for the contract which are Atomic Weapons Establishment sites at Aldermaston and Burghfield, both in Berkshire, Sellafield in West Cumbria, and Chapelcross in Dumfriesshire.

CNS, which already manages material owned by the MoD under another contract, will now work alongside the MoD in a public consultation period which is expected to end in 2015 with the final preferred site expected to be announced in early 2016.

The submarines which will be dismantled at the site will already have the nuclear reactor stripped out of them at their storage site with the reactor pressure vessel – which houses the reactor in the submarine – the only radioactive component to be decommissioned.

David Slater, managing director of CNS, reassured the public and said the work is “more simple” than the company does currently and said if uts bid was successful then it would have a “large impact” on the local economy.

He said: We are looking forward to working with our stakeholders and the MoD as we move forward in the tender process.”

Currently 11 of the 27 submarines are being stored afloat at the Devonport dockyard in Devonshire with a further seven stored afloat at the Rosyth dockyard in Fife, Scotland.

Currently the MoD is spending millions of pounds a year keeping the decommissioned submarines maintained and afloat.

No details have so far been released of how much the contract may be worth.
