AN amateur photographer has been recognised in a national competition, just two years after receiving his first camera.

A photograph taken by James Wallace, 31, from Frodsham, has been commended by judges in the 2013 Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.

James, a solicitor at Chester law firm Aaron and Partners LLP, was commended in the competition’s urban view category for his image Fiddlers Ferry Power Station at Dawn.

His stunning image is now on display alongside other entries in an exhibition at the National Theatre, London.

The shot, which James took last January, is also included in Landscape Photographer of the Year: Collection 7, a compilation book of the competition’s top entries.

James, who only took up photography in September 2011 after receiving a camera as a birthday present from his girlfriend, said: “I was really pleased to be commended in the competition, particularly with the standard being so high this year.

“I’m a keen walker and love the outdoors, and so the two hobbies go together.

“I took the image back in January. I originally went out to photograph the Silver Jubilee bridge, but when I arrived at the location I was immediately attracted to the pink cloud being emitted by the cooling towers of the power station.

“I was in the right place at the right time. I’ve never entered a competition before, and just thought it was worth having a go.

“Having got so far, I’ll definitely be entering again next year!

“We went to a private viewing of the exhibition and it was great to see my photograph on display with the other submissions. It was also featured over a double page spread in the book.”

The photography award completes a busy few weeks for James, who has completed the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners qualification following two years of study.

The Landscape Photographer of the Year exhibition is free to enter and runs until February 8 at the National Theatre, London.
