MORE than 450 bikers wore their Father Christmas outfits to take part in Bill Smith Motors annual charity motorcycle ride.

More than £3,000 was raised in aid of Claire House Children’s Hospice thanks to donations, merchandise sales and a raffle.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Chester at the weekend to watch the bikers, who turned out in record numbers, make the trip, which began at Bill Smith Motors in Boughton before heading up the A41 to Clatterbridge Hospital, finishing at Claire House.

Karen Smith, owner of Bill Smith Motors and a fundraiser for Claire House, said: “This is the eighth year that we have run the event and to have record numbers turn out to support us is just fantastic. Everyone had a great time.

“I have been involved with Claire House for about 20 years, since the very beginning, so it is a cause which is very close to my heart.

“Last year we raised £1,000 and we had hoped to raise £1,500 this year. To double that is just wonderful.

“It costs the hospice £6,000 a day to keep it running, so to be able to contribute to the running costs for half-a-day represents a huge achievement and we are all really pleased.”
