ONE of Chester FC’s most recognisable faces has been recognised for more than 40-years of voluntary work for the club with a regional award.

Lifelong Blues fan Barrie Hipkiss was rewarded for his dedicated service to the club by picking up the Unsung Hero Award at the North West Football Awards on Monday night.

Mr Hipkiss, a Chester supporter since 1946, volunteers as the club’s matchday co-ordinator and organises travel for fans to away matches.

“It was humbling to be recognised for what I’ve done over the years and it is an award I’ll cherish,” said Mr Hipkiss, who picked up his award on the same night club captain George Horan collected the North West Conference Player of the Year award.

Mr Hipkiss added: “It shows again how the club has progressed in recent years.

“I love the football club and that is what has always motivated me to want to give my time and help out. We are like one big family and I intend to carry on what I am doing for as long as I physically can.”

Mr Hipkiss rubbed shoulders with key football personalities such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Jamie Carragher and ex-Blues player Roberto Martinez at the event at Lancashire Cricket Club’s Point Conference Centre.
