ONE of the new free schools in Chester has welcomed its first intake of pupils.
St Martin’s Academy in Hoole has opened with a 25-strong reception class and has already received its first application for September 2014.
Head Wenda Smith said she was delighted by the early vote of confidence, which has seen a number of prospective parents registering an interest in sending children to the school.
She said: “It’s fantastic to see that others are recognising what we have known all along – that St Martin’s is a vibrant and nurturing environment that will offer pupils a great education in outstanding facilities.
“We’ve been so pleased with our first weeks. The dedication of both our staff and families has proved to be key to our success so far.
“We look forward to welcoming our 2014 class and their families with great enthusiasm.”
Pupils have settled into the new classrooms and are enjoying a wide range of activities including sports coaching and music.
School lunches are provided each day by the nearby Green Bough Hotel.
The school will add a new reception class each year until it reaches full capacity in 2019 and each class will be named after one of the historic gates of Chester.
The first class has been named Newgate.
An open evening is being held at 7pm on Monday, October 7, at Hoole All Saints Church for prospective families.
