PUPILS from Chester’s first free school gathered together at Chester Town Hall to watch the Town Crier proclaim the school formally open.
University Cathedral Free School (UCFS) has welcomed an initial intake of 60 pupils, marking the culmination of almost two years of planning by sponsor University of Chester Academies Trust and partner Chester Cathedral.
UCFS is located in the city centre and currently has two full infant classes. Ultimately the school will be located in historic Abbey Square in Chester, taking pride of place within the beautiful setting.
Until then, UCFS is based two minutes away in Gateway House which will provide access to the many amenities afforded to the school by the cathedral.
The school has a unique curriculum with music forming an integral part of the children’s learning and underpinning almost every aspect of the school.
The school motto is ‘A Voice for Every Child’ and each member of staff has been selected for their dedication to providing the very best in their specialist areas of education which meet the targets of the school and their passion for the school’s ethos.
Gareth Davies, principal of UCFS, said: “From humble ideas, through creative imaginations, from dreams to the reality, all holding the highest of expectations for our children, the University Cathedral Free School has now opened its doors to two full classes of children.
“Being oversubscribed since very early on, we’re delighted to welcome 60 excited children to Gateway House, our temporary home, before moving to the beautiful Abbey Square location in the new year.”
