CHEESE wheels hurtled up and down one of Chester’s busiest shopping streets yesterday, with contestants navigating hay bales and scarecrows in the city’s annual cheese rolling event.
A large crowd gathered in Bridge Street for the traditional contest, which marks the start of the Chester Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival.
Spectators cheered and shouted encouragement to the eight teams signed up to push cheese wheels around an obstacle course.
Teams taking part included defending champions The Cheshire Cheese Company, Chorlton Cheese, sponsors Allington Hughes, Dee 106.3 and Taste Cheshire.
Participants had been practising hard in the lead up to the competition in the hope of becoming the ‘big cheese’ and coming away with the sought-after title.
Strict rules were in place and judges kept a close eye on the race to ensure the cheeses stayed on the straight and narrow and within the course barriers.
Teams were whittled down before a nailbiting final in which the Cheshire Cheese Company beat Chorlton Cheese in the race to the finishing line.
