Chester's biggest family fireworks display looks set to go with a bang on Saturday night. 

CHESTER’S biggest family fireworks display looks set to go with a bang on Saturday night.

Chester Lions Club’s 40th annual fireworks spectacular takes place at Chester Racecourse with gates opening at 4.30pm.

Organisers hope to raise thousands of pounds for charity and are encouraging families to dress in red, white and blue for the Diamond Jubilee-themed extravaganza.

There will be live music from Junior Parker and Motion Empire, fairground rides, fire eaters, stilt walkers and face painters along with the Chester Giants.

Peter Upton from Chester Lions Club said: “In the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year, our aim is for the Chester Lions annual firework display night to be bigger and better than ever before.

“We'll have a red, white and blue theme running throughout the event including the fireworks, which will also be synchronized to music spanning the last 60 years.”

All ages are catered for with a special toddlers display at 6.45pm and the main event at 7.30pm.

Traditional food including a hog roast, jacket potatoes, roasted chestnuts, candy floss and toffee apples will be available throughout the night.

Chester Lions Club staged its an annual display at Chester Zoo for many years before relocating to the racecourse.

M&S Bank and Chester and District Housing Trust have sponsored this year’s display.

M&S Bank CEO Colin Kersley said: “This has been an incredibly exciting year for our business with the launch of M&S Bank and we are committed to making it a special year for Chester Lions Club, helping them to deliver their best fireworks night ever.

“We hope this will be an occasion for all the local community to enjoy celebrating what has been a truly memorable year for so many reasons."

Entry costs £5 and is free for under 7s. Charity collections are available for those choosing to watch from the city walls.
