A CHESTER nightclub is working with Cheshire police to promote a new alcohol awareness campaign.

Bosses at Cruise  on St John Street are backing the police’s ‘Totally Wasted’ campaign which aims to encourage revellers to think about how much alcohol they drink while on a night out.

The nightclub is also part of ArcAngel Chester, a scheme designed to tackle alcohol fuelled crime and anti-social behaviour in the city.

Cruise manager Lenny Cunningham said: “A lot of people drink prior to coming out and alcohol is too available with the off trade selling discounted alcohol.

“On some occasions we have had to get assistance from Cheshire police. The incidents they get involved in are when people try to gain entry to the club who are drunk.

“Even though we have security on the door, some people don’t accept ‘no’ as an answer and police assistance is welcomed.

“On student themed nights at Cruise, the 18 to 24 year olds are the preloaders and, on occasion, we have had to ring their parents to come and collect them because they are in such a state.”

The campaign, which is being actively promoted by the nightclub through its social media channels, aims to raise awareness of the danger of excessive drinking and ‘preloading’, where people drink heavily at home before they leave for a night out.

Mr Cunningham added: “I agree with and support the concept of ‘Totally Wasted’.

“There can be problems with people at home who are drinking with friends before they come out. If alcohol wasn’t as cheap to buy then people could come out and drink for longer.

“If people paced themselves, there wouldn’t be arguments with security and I think that the more we can get the message out about responsible drinking, then the more that it will start to impact on drinkers’ attitudes.”
