TWO celebrated broadcasters helped the Cheshire and North Wales Lady Taverners celebrate their 25th anniversary last week.

Television presenter, Judith Chalmers OBE, and former BBC newscaster, Gordon Burns, entertained guests at the Long Room, Eaton Park, Chester, to mark the special occasion, which raised over £5,000 for the charity.

Judith and Gordon gave a talk on their respective lives and careers to the 160 assembled guests and were joined by current BBC morning news anchor, Louise Minchin, who drew the raffle.

Chris Talbot, who set up the Cheshire and North Wales branch 12 years ago, said: “It was a great occasion and we were thrilled to welcome Judith and Gordon to Chester.”

The Lady Taverners have raised over £12m in the past 25 years, helping disadvantaged children and those with special needs get involved in sport and recreation and providing specially-adapted minibuses for schools and clubs.

Special guests for the event included pupils from St Christopher’s in Wrexham, who were the recipients of a new minibus from The Lady Taverners to help them get to and from sports matches and activities.

The silver anniversary, which was celebrated at events across the world, also marked the final event for outgoing chairman of the Cheshire and North Wales Lady Taverners, Lori Wilkins Parker, who stepped down after five years in the post.

Lori said: “I am sad to step down, however I have had five wonderful years as chairman and we have done some lovely events.

“The nicest part of the role has been visiting children and meeting the teachers and children we have been able to provide with our minibuses, sensory rooms, sports equipment and all weather cricket pitches.

“I feel I am leaving the committee in good hands as Mrs Tracy Warrington is taking over from me.”
