London Appeal Court has cut Hockey's sentence to two years

THE appeal court has cut the jail term of a trainee teacher who was jailed for amassing a hoard of child porn on his computer.

Grant Youlden Hockey, 44, was prosecuted after police raided his home in January 2009, taking away his computer for forensic examination.

Officers then went to the primary school where he worked in Chester, uncovering a laptop which contained more than 200,000 indecent images of children, the London Appeal Court heard.

Hockey had meticulously organised the degrading images into elaborate folders on his computer, said Mr Justice Lindblom.

He had also tried to use sophisticated encryption software to prevent access to his computer and hard drive, the court heard.

Hockey initially denied being responsible for downloading the images, said the judge, claiming someone else had set him up.

But police discovered that Hockey was the only one involved and he ultimately admitted his guilt.

Hockey, from Wirral, admitted 30 counts of making indecent pictures of children and received a 30-month term in March, 2010 at Liverpool Crown Court.

His case reached the Appeal Court when he challenged the length of his sentence, which the court cut to two years.

Mr Justice Lindblom, sitting with Lord Justice Moses and Judge Charles Wide QC, said Hockey had expressed genuine remorse for his crimes and was now a broken man.

The judge said many of the images discovered were near the top of the range in terms of depravity, but concluded his original sentence was too long.

“We think 30 months was manifestly excessive. The appropriate sentence was two years.”
