SIX colleagues from a design agency have driven almost 2,000 miles across Europe in clapped-out cars for charity.

Reckless New Media in Chester entered two teams in the annual Ramshackle Rally covering six countries in five days to raise cash for Claire House Children’s Hospice.

Each team bought £200 bangers for the challenge, with sponsors paying to advertise on the Ford Escort and Rover 216 convertibles.

Setting off from Chester, the teams drove through Britain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Slovenia before reaching the end of the road in Munich, Germany.

The teams encountered the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Lake Como, the Stelvio Pass, the Karawanks Tunnel and Lake Bled.

The incredible journey was close to being a non-starter when the Ford Escort being driven by Team Reckless Racing suffered major exhaust damage on the M25.

Sean Meehan said: “It was a real struggle to get to the start line for the teams.

“Both the cars were sprayed black and covered in our sponsors logos. The support we have had has been unreal.

“The Ford Escort was the least reliable of the two cars and had to be bump-started along the way.

“The boot locks broke on both cars during the trip and the teams ended up having to pull the luggage through the back seat.

“Clare House is a charity that is close to our hearts and so far we have raised more than £4,000 for the hospice.”

Clare House provides respite care for terminally ill babies, children, teenagers and their families.

The hospice has 10 beds but can currently only afford to open eight and relies almost on donations to meet its £2.5 million running costs.

In order to raise as much money as possible, the company offered businesses the chance to win studio time worth £5,000.

Individual sponsors were also entered into a draw for a chance to win Apple iPod shuffles in return for their donations.
