POLICE chiefs have welcomed Home Office figures showing crime across Cheshire has fallen by six per cent.

Overall there were 58,072 crimes between June 2011 and June 2012 with almost 3,500 fewer crimes reported than the same period last year.

House burglaries fell by eight per cent, violent crime dropped with more than 750 fewer assault victims and robberies have fallen by 11 per cent.

Deputy chief constable Helen King said: “I believe the figures show how the Cheshire Constabulary is working effectively with partners and the public to deal with the issues that matter to local people.

“The continuing drop in overall crime and with less people becoming victims of personal crime such as burglary and other violent offences such as assault and robbery, suggests Cheshire residents can have confidence in the service we provide.”

DCC King said she was encouraged by the figures but pledged the force would not become complacent.

She said: “Victims continue to tell us they are very satisfied with the service they receive from us and our officers are getting more positive results when investigating crime and resolving incidents of anti-social behaviour and other issues affecting our neighbourhoods.

“We will continue to work hard to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour to provide Cheshire residents, communities, businesses and visitors with the confidence that they are receiving a first class policing service."

Cheshire Police are reminding residents to continue to do all they can to avoid becoming victims of crime.

Officers traditionally see rises in alcohol-related crime and disorder, particularly amongst younger people, over the festive period.

The force has launched a campaign to raise awareness of this issue and advice can be found at www.upbeat.uk.com /totallywastedor or by calling 101.
