Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory

ANTIQUES relating to HMS Victory and the Battle of Trafalgar are to go on sale in Chester.

Artefacts from Lord Nelson’s flagship the Victory, and other items from the famous battle will be available to buy at The Chester Antiques Show being held at Chester Racecourse next Thursday to Sunday.

Among the most unusual items on sale will be a section of floor joist from the lower gun deck, still showing traces of the red paint which Nelson ordered to be used to disguise blood spilled during the battle.

Also included in the collection, which is being offered for sale by Chester antiques dealer Patrick Payne, of Phoenix Fine Art, will be paintings from the Victory and a one-of-a-kind, commemorative shield made from the wood of the famous ship.

Mr Payne said: “I’m expecting a lot of interest and I am hoping to sell it in its entirety to one buyer.

“With the 207th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar taking place while the fair is open, it seemed a fitting moment to finally find a new home for the collection.”

The Chester Antiques Show, which will be held in the County Grandstand, is one of the most popular antiques fairs in Britain.

It will feature about 50 leading specialist dealers from across the country, with collectors offered a wide range of fine art and antiques from the past 500 years.

Paintings, period furniture, fine silver and jewellery will feature among the 50 stalls on three floors of the County Grandstand.

Admission to the event costs £5.
