City celebrates Diwali in a 'festival of hope and joy'

CHESTER was awash with colour on the arrival of a popular Hindu festival.

Diwali – or the festival of lights – was celebrated on Saturday with a procession from Town Hall Square to Eastgate Street, where there was a dance display.

Revellers were invited to take part in free workshops, including Indian art (Rangoli), Indian candles (Diyas), Indian hand painting (Henna), Indian doll making and plate decorating (Pooja Thali) along with free Indian food tasting.

The event was a joint enterprise between Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Sanjhi Indian Association, which has been working with Cheshire, Halton and Warrington Race and Equality Centre to build on the success of the previous two years' events.

Sanjhi Indian Association chairman Sarika Kaushik said: “Diwali is very much a festival bringing a reaffirmation of hope, a renewed commitment to friendship and goodwill, and an opportunity to celebrate the various joys of life.

“There are several different legends that go with the festival in different parts of India, but in essence Diwali is a celebration of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.”
