Four separate applications were turned down by Cheshire West and Chester Council's (CWaC) strategic planning committee 

CONTROVERSIAL plans for more than 300 new homes on greenfield sites in Tattenhall have been rejected.

Four separate applications were turned down by Cheshire West and Chester Council’s (CWaC) strategic planning committee despite officers recommending the developments should be allowed.

But the committee approved plans for 31 homes on the vacant Oak Room pub site near the village after hearing there was overwhelmin” support for the proposals.

Tattenhall councillor Mike Jones had asked for the committee to consider the five applications together.

He told Thursday’s meeting he supported the Oak Room development but warned the four greenfield schemes for a total of 317 homes would be disastrous for the village.

Tattenhall Parish Council and residents also opposed the applications proposed for sites off Chester Road, Greenlands and Harding Avenue.

Committee chairman Cllr Jill Houlbrook said allowing the four schemes would be like surrounding Tattenhall with one great big housing estate.

Cllr Jones said two further proposed developments along with an approved extra care development could take the number of new homes in the village to 460.

He said: “Tattenhall is pro-growth, as evidence shows, but to swamp one village with 460 dwellings – a 70 per cent increase – in a market so poor due to lack of cash available for buyers is madness.

“They are of such a scale that they do not represent sustainable development. I believe they would cause significant harm to our vibrant village.

“They would have a substantial impact on the landscape, especially on the gateways into Tattenhall, effectively developing an urban appearance for a rural village.”

Committee members rejected two applications for a total of 110 homes from Taylor Wimpey, 137 homes proposed by Ashley Wall and plans for up to 70 homes put forward by Redrow.

They also agreed a motion asking the Secretary of State to personally determine any appeals lodged against the refusal to grant permission.
