RELENTLESS rain caused flooding chaos across Chester with roads being closed, trains cancelled and stranded drivers rescued from cars.
Rain lashed down continuously, submerging several major routes around the city, while Guilden Sutton was virtually cut off after three roads were closed.
Motorists were urged to avoid the village and fire crews had to rescue a woman from her car after she became trapped by floodwater in Wicker Lane.
Firefighters wearing wading gear rescued a man from the roof of his car in Stoak after it was submerged in three feet of water and the car was towed out of the water by a tractor.
Sycamore Drive in Lache was shut after being hit by severe flooding, with water flooding gardens and coming within inches of homes.
One resident, who asked not to be named, said flooding was becoming an increasingly common problem.
She said: “The road was completely flooded and the water in my back garden was a couple of feet deep.
“It came right up to the doorstep and I have lost everything that was in my shed, all my tools and things. The drains are overflowing and there is sewage in the street.
“This happens every time we have heavy rain, but nobody seems to be listening to us.”
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service was inundated with flooding reports from across the city and Cheshire police advised motorists not to venture on to roads unless “absolutely necessary”.
Other areas affected included Blacon, Saughall, Kinnerton, Handbridge, Mickle Trafford and Eccleston.
Rising river levels saw the Environment Agency issue flood alerts for the River Dee and River Gowy while residents of homes surrounding Rivacre Brook in Great Sutton were warned to prepare for flooding.
Merseyrail suspended services between Chester and Liverpool; Arriva Train Wales cancelled services to Crewe and Virgin Trains warned passengers to expect severe delays.
