Top chef helps Lache pupils cook up a treat

A TOP chef has given some tips to aspiring young cooks during a visit to a school.

Children at St Clare’s Catholic Primary School in Lache took part in a culinary masterclass with James Holden before they created their own delicious trifles.

James talked to the children about food sourcing, healthy eating and hygiene before showing them how to make the perfect trifle.

The school is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and James decided to create an extra special healthy celebration trifle to mark the occasion. Year 5 and 6 pupils then had the opportunity to show what they had learned by making their own.

Teacher Bronwen Braisdell said: “The day was split into two and James taught the children about senses, taste and nutrition before the practical session.

“All the children really loved the session. They all went home at the end of the day wearing their chef hats and carrying their trifles – that is if they had not eaten them already.

“It was the first time we have done anything like this and it was really successful.

“We are going to Chester Zoo this week for a follow up session to learn about animal nutrition.”

The session was organised by national charity Chefs Adopt a School, founded in 1990 by the Academy of Culinary Arts.

The scheme works with schools across the county and aims to teach children about the importance of food through cooking and tasting it together.
