Action from a previous Chester Rotary Charity Raft Race

A HUGELY popular Chester tradition scuppered by heavy rain in July has been rearranged.

Chester Rotary’s charity raft race organisers had to postpone the original race as the swollen River Dee meant conditions were too dangerous.

The annual event has entertained families for the past 37 years and has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

Organisers have rescheduled this year’s race for Sunday, September 23.

All the rafts that entered the original race are planning to take part with the 400 metre course starting near The Boathouse pub and finishing just over the weir.

Spokesman Brendan Witter said: “Rafts are on the water from soon after 10am and the best viewing is from the meadows as they prepare, then along the footpath to the suspension bridge and into The Groves. The race starts at 10.30am and the theme in this Olympic year is the slowest, lowest, weakest and craziest sporting incidents.

“We are hoping to get the usual large crowds to watch and help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.”

Parking can be accessed through Lower Park Road in Queen’s Park and spectators can support the rafters by donating to collections on the day.

Prizes are awarded for the fastest raft, the best interpretation of the theme along with the best ladies and hostelry entries.

Between 30 and 35 rafts traditionally take part in the race with spectators throwing flour and water bombs at the crews.
