Drivers of black cabs are set to learn whether their request for more city centre cab stands has been successful.

Chester Licensed Hackney Association has asked for additional evening and night time stands in Bridge Street, Hunter Street and Northgate Street.

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s (CWaC) executive will discuss the request when it meets next Wednesday.

King Street Area Residents’ Association and the Chester and Cheshire West Private Hire Drivers’ Association have both raised objections to the additional stands.

In his report to the executive, the council’s director of community and environment Steve Kent says the proposed stands are in locations where late night visitors to the city congregate hoping to find transport home.

The proposed Northgate Street stand would be located opposite an existing stand and has been recommended for approval by Mr Kent.

He states: “Due in part to takeaway food outlets in this area and in particular, on the side of the road to the proposed rank, it was deemed to be a place of high demand for late night transportation out of the city.

“As a result, the hackney carriage rank on the opposite side of the road was at times full.

“It was considered that an additional rank at this location would make hackney carriage vehicles more readily available and reduce waiting times.”

But the request for an extra stand opposite the Odeon building in Hunter Street looks set to be refused until proposed developments in the area – which include the city’s new theatre and cultural venue – have progressed.

Mr Kent has suggested the decision on an extra stand in Bridge Street be delayed until October. He says the area is already “well provided” for and that an additional rank had been created in September, 2010.
