COMEDIAN John Bishop was on the scoresheet during a charity match in memory of a young Chester FC fan who died suddenly while playing football.
The recently promoted Chester squad took on a former Chester City FC team yesterday in honour of Ciaran Geddes.
The seven-year-old died during a game of football with his friends after school.
Following his tragic death last month, Chester FC organised the game at the Exacta Stadium, with all proceeds going to the British Heart Foundation.
Players from the 2004 Conference championship-winning side were joined by top comedians John Bishop and Jason Manford as well as former players who have also previously starred for Chester City.
They wore specially-made shirts, courtesy of Chester FC’s principal partners, MBNA.
The match kicked off at 1pm and a one-minute applause was held before the match.
A crowd of 1,731 helped bring in funds for the British Heart Foundation.
The club raised the money to help the purchase of defibrillator packs for Ciaran’s school in Warrington and also the junior football team he played for.
Following the match, an auction was held in the Blues Bar at the ground, where each signed Chester player’s shirt was auctioned off.
A raffle, which include a prize of a Chester football shirt signed by all of the players taking part, and a signed ball, also helped to boost the appeal.
Former Chester players such as Kevin McIntyre, Phil Bolland, Carl Ruffer, Ben Davies, Michael Twiss, Jamie Heard and Daryl Clare were among the players who appeared on behalf of the 2004 team.
Players from years gone by also put on their football boots to play, including Billy Stewart, Eddie Bishop, Chris Lightfoot, Jimmy Haarhoff, and Nigel Edwards.
The Chester City manager for the day was Paul Carden, the captain who lifted the title back in 2004 and assisted by former Chester team-mate and championship-winning goalkeeper Wayne Brown.
Chester FC beat the former Chester players 6-4, thanks to two late strikes from Levi Mackin and Iain Howard.
