Speight steering clear of Wrexham FC title talk

LEADING scorer Jake Speight believes it is too early to speculate Wrexham’s clash at Fleetwood Town will be a title-deciding clash.

Second placed Wrexham currently trail leaders Fleetwood Town by one point and the sides meet at The Highbury Stadium on Tuesday, April 10.

Luton Town in third spot are a further nine points adrift of Wrexham and while it is turning into a two-horse race for automatic promotion, Speight is not thinking of the showdown with Fleetwood just yet.

“It is too early to say that,” said Speight when asked it the race for the title would be decided on the Fleetwood game. “I think everyone in this league is capable of beating anyone on their day.

“You have seen that when we have gone to places like Barrow and Forest Green.

“Gateshead were up there at the start of the season, you have got Luton but we are both pulling away from the rest of the pack.

“It may come down to that game later in the season but we have just got to concentrate on the matches coming up before then.

“We have just got to focus on ourselves, keep putting the wins together and go on a run again.”

While Wrexham got back to winning ways by beating Bath City 2-0 at The Racecourse on Saturday, Fleetwood also took three points from their trip to Forest Green Rovers.

It took a goal deep into stoppage time for Fleetwood to seal a 2-1 victory but Speight is more concerned about Wrexham maintaining their promotion challenge.

“Coming up on the scoreboard, I think a few of the boys saw the score was 1-1 and then we found out Fleetwood had won,” said Speight.

“But we can’t keep watching them. We need to concentrate on ourselves and make sure we keep getting three points, and perform to the best of our ability every time we go out on the pitch.”

Speight took his tally for the season to 13 goals when he converted a penalty early in the second half against Bath.

Skipper Dean Keates had missed penalties in two of the previous three matches and Speight said there was never any doubt he would be back on spot-kick duty.

“We did have a little bit of banter,” said Speight. “I don’t think Dean wants to take penalties any more.

“But everyone is happy with the three points and I think that is put behind us now.”

Speight was delighted Wrexham, whose 16 game unbeaten league run came to an end at Forest Green last Tuesday, returned to winning ways at the weekend.

“I think it was a bit of a scrappy game again but the lads stuck together and we got the three points,” said Speight.

“We like to play well but we can’t play well every week. Some of the boys are still tired from the Brighton game, there have been a lot of games lately, and three points is all that matters. Promotion is the main target.”

Wrexham are without a game at the weekend because scheduled opponents Kidderminster Harriers are on FA Trophy duty so the Reds return to action a week on Saturday at troubled Darlington, and Speight has welcomed the enforced break.

“We have got a few players out and a few players are suffering from a few niggles so the break will let everyone get back fit,” he added.
