WREXHAM FC’s crunch FA Cup tie against Brighton will be played tonight - weather permitting.

The third round replay, due to be played at The Racecourse last night, fell victim to freezing conditions.

The match was postponed yesterday morning after officials from both clubs inspected the Racecourse playing surface.

But with forecasters predicting a significant upturn in temperatures the game was rescheduled for tonight, kicking off at 7.15pm.

Wrexham’s secretary Geraint Parry said: “Wrexham have fans coming from as far away as Cornwall, Colchester and Glasgow and of course Brighton supporters have to set off early to arrive in good time. Everyone agreed that due to the conditions we should postpone.

“Gus Poyet, the Brighton manager, was here and he complimented us on The Racecourse. He said it was a good ground and he was looking forward to the match.

“We apologise for any inconvenience. Unfortunately from time to time we are in the hands of the elements on matters such as this.”

He added: “Moving the start slightly forward will mean Brighton can leave for home just a little bit earlier.”

Mr Parry said it was important to play the fixture as soon as possible to ensure the winner had a reasonable amount of time to sell tickets for the fourth round tie – a home clash against Premier League giants Newcastle United on January 28.

The replay was due to be screened last night on the Welsh language television channel S4C and a spokesman confirmed it now planned to show the game tonight.

A statement from S4C said: “The programme Sgorio, starting at 7pm, will bring live coverage of the tie.

“English subtitles will be provided and the game is also available to watch live on the S4C website s4c.co.uk.”

Moving the game from Tuesday to Wednesday caused much debate on the Wrexham FC fans’ forum Red Passion.

Among the comments, Salfordred said: “Surely if the game was called off they wouldn’t move it to the following day? If they do I won’t be able to go, not enough time to arrange time off from work.”

- A COUNCILLOR says police have told him they will deal firmly with any cars parked inconsiderately outside The Racecourse tonight.

Cllr Phil Wynn, who represents the area around the ground, said: “I have had an assurance from the police anyone parking in a way which causes an obstruction in Mold Road and surrounding side-streets will be towed away.

“I am glad to have this as I believe there will be 9,000 people coming by car.”
