MOLD ALEX 2
LLANGOLLEN TOWN 2

BEFORE the kick-off, Gareth Lloyd’s Llangollen Town will probably have settled for a draw from their testing trip to Wrexham Area League Premier Division title-chasers Mold Alex.

However, after building up an excellent two-goal lead inside the opening 20 minutes, battling Llan may feel disappointed to have ultimately only picked up a single point from their endeavours.

In their first game of 2012, Llangollen really couldn’t have wished for a better start.

Only two minutes had been played when Simon Williams’ corner kick eluded everybody and went straight into the Mold net.

Even better was to come for Llan after 20 minutes as they doubled their lead.

Mold’s Anthony Mee slipped in the box, which left Town’s Josh Langford free to slot the ball past Alex keeper Dan Cork to make it 2-0.

After this setback, Mold gradually found their feet but they failed to take several opportunities in front of goal.

In fact, it was the visitors who very nearly put themselves out of sight 10 minutes from half-time as another attack was finished with a blistering shot that came back out off the crossbar.

As it turned out, the next goal went to Mold.

They were right back in the game when Tom Evans crossed into the dangerzone and Shane Parry was in the right place to head home from close range just two minutes from the interval.

That strike perked up the home side and it was Alex who had the better of the second half.

Committed Llangollen defending kept them out until the 70th minute, when Jack Abraham’s excellent free kick found the top corner of the net.

There was a real mixed bag of results for local sides involved in Wrexham Area League action over the weekend.

Bala Town Reserves maintained their improvement in the Reserves’ Division with a comfortable 3-0 scoreline at Coedpoeth United Reserves, while Corwen Reserves maintained their presence towards the top of the table courtesy of their 1-0 verdict at Hawarden Rangers Reserves.

Meanwhile, Gresford Athletic Reserves pulled themselves off the basement by picking up a 1-1 draw at home to Ruthin Town Reserves.

Turning to the Reserves / Colts section and Argoed United Reserves secured a good 4-2 win at Llangollen Town Reserves, who hit back via a double salvo from Ben Wilson.

Alex Williams and Ben Roberts combined for FC Cefn Reserves to chalk up a 2-1 win at Ruthin Colts, who replied through Neil Davies.
