AN ANGLESEY mother is looking forward to enjoying “the best Christmas ever” now that her son is home for good, twenty months after a life-changing accident.
Mandy Robinson’s son Oliver, from Bodedern, was serving in Germany with the Queen’s Dragoon Guards when he was struck by a car in a hit and run accident in March 2010.
The accident left Oliver, aged 26, brain damaged after he suffered severe head injuries and, although parts of his skull were rebuilt, he now requires round the clock care and has spent most of the last twenty months in a hospital in Leeds.
After a series of delays Oliver was finally given a care team and returned home last week, much to the delight of his family.
“It’s fantastic, it’s the best Christmas ever,” said Mrs Robinson.
“I feel that our lives can start again. They have been on hold for so long.”
It was hoped that Oliver could have returned earlier in the year but problems and delays with paper work meant the carers could not be arranged in time.
However, a team of four support workers have now been recruited.
Mrs Robinson, who herself works as a nurse at Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley, said she has already noticed a positive effect on her son.
“We notice every time we see him and the social worker cannot get over how well he is doing.
“He is so much happier at home. It’s a happier ending than we thought it would ever be.
“The family is back together again.”
